She began her career making popcorn at the Showroom Cinema and then found herself directing the Showcomotion Film Festival in 2000.  She bid a tearful farewell to Sheffield in 2001 and joined the British Film Institute's Exhibition Development Unit. 

A year later she fled back up North to set up the Audience Development Fund at Northern Film & Media, the screen agency for the North East of England where she worked until 2007.
